Gábor Takács-Nagy

Gábor Takács-Nagy

Violinist turned conductor, Gábor Takács-Nagy brings the experience of chamber music to his conducting gestures. Born in Budapest, he was a founding member and leader of the Takács Quartet from 1975 to 1992. He then founded the Takács Piano Trio in 1996, followed by the Mikrokosmos Quartet in 1998, before turning to orchestral conducting in 2003.

He was appointed Music Director of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in 2007, then took up positions with the Manchester Camerata from 2011 and with the Budapest Festival Orchestra as principal guest conductor from 2012. His career thus combines a very fine sensitivity to instrumental balance with a strong attachment to the Hungarian repertoire.

His work has been recognized with the Liszt Prize in 1982, the Béla Bartók–Ditta Pásztory Prize in 2017 and the Kossuth Prize in 2024. He taught string quartet at the Haute École de musique de Genève until 2021 and became an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in 2012.
