Jonathan Nott

Jonathan Nott

Jonathan Nott conceives conducting as a dialogue between repertoire, opera and contemporary creation. He studied music at Cambridge, voice and flute at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and later conducting in London. His early work in the opera houses of Frankfurt and Wiesbaden was followed by engagements with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble intercontemporain, of which he was music director from 2000 to 2003.

Principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2016, he carried out substantial work there, notably around Mahler. His recording of the Ninth Symphony earned him a Midem Award in 2010. He then led the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande as music and artistic director from 2017 to 2025; he also served as music director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra from 2014 to March 2026.

His career also includes directing the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie from 2014 to 2024 and launching the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition. From the 2026–2027 season, he is music director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
