Lionel Bringuier
Lionel Bringuier approaches conducting with the dual background of the cello and an exceptionally early training. Born in Nice in 1986 into a family of musicians, he studied both disciplines at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris. At 19, one year after graduating, he won the Besançon International Young Conductors Competition.
From 2007 to 2013 he worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic: first as assistant to Esa-Pekka Salonen, then as associate conductor and then as resident conductor under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. He also led the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Valladolid from 2009 to 2012, before serving as music director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich from 2014 to 2018. His career also includes collaborations with the Orchestre de Bretagne and the Ensemble orchestral de Paris.
The Orchestre philharmonique royal de Liège has appointed him music director effective September 2025, for a four-year term. Guest-conducting engagements in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia have taken him widely; he pays particular attention to the French repertoire, to education and to young artists.
