Benjamin Britten (1913–1976)

Benjamin Britten (1913–1976)

English composer Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) renewed opera with Peter Grimes (1945), written for the tenor Peter Pears, his companion and artistic partner. He co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival in 1948. His writing combines clarity, dramatic tension and a taste for narrative: The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra even turns a listening lesson into a symphonic celebration.
