A majestic lion, tortoises taking their time, then the swan seeming to glide over the water: Saint-Saëns creates fourteen portraits full of mischief. At every turn, a new timbre conjures an animal, a smile, or an unexpected emotion.
Composed in 1886 for a private occasion, The Carnival of the Animals was, in Saint-Saëns’s eyes, a diversion too impish to suit his image as a serious composer. The complete work was only published after his death; only The Swan circulated during his lifetime.
